Helicopter Engineer Jobs:
Keep Rotors Turning and Build a Strong Career

Every helicopter that flies safely has a skilled engineer behind it. AviatorJob brings together helicopter engineer jobs in the UK and overseas, posted directly by operators and maintenance firms. You can read the full brief, filter by licence and aircraft type, and apply in about a minute with no account.

The Role

What a Helicopter Engineer Does

Helicopter engineers inspect, repair and test aircraft so that pilots and passengers can trust them. No two days are the same. Your work might include:

  • Daily checks and planned servicing
  • Finding and fixing faults in engines, gearboxes, rotors and controls
  • Testing avionics, wiring and flight systems
  • Writing up work and signing aircraft back into service
  • Working with pilots, planners and stores teams
  • Line maintenance and Base maintenance

It is careful, hands-on work where accuracy matters. In return, you get skills that are in demand all over the world.

Employers

Where You Could Work

Some of the most common helicopter engineer jobs in the UK are with:

Offshore operators

Keeping crew-change aircraft ready for oil and gas or to offshore windfarms.

Emergency medical and rescue operators

Making sure aircraft are ready to launch 24/7.

Charter and private operators

Looking after smaller fleets with a personal touch.

Maintenance and repair firms (MRO)

Carrying out deep checks, overhauls and upgrades.

Flight schools

Caring for training aircraft, many of which are piston aircraft but may include turbines too.

Some roles are based at a single site, while others involve shifts or time away at remote bases. Each job on our board will stipulate the requirements needed by the company, so you know what to expect.

Requirements

Licences and Skills Employers Ask For

Most employers look for a maintenance licence, such as a Part-66 B1.3 for mechanical work or B2 for avionics. For many helicopter engineer jobs in the UK, a licence that covers turbine helicopters is the key. Employers may also want:

  • A type rating or course on the aircraft they fly, such as the H145, AW139, AW169 or S-92
  • Proven hands-on experience, which can range from a few years to many
  • Good record-keeping and a careful, safety-first approach
  • The right to work in the country where the base is located

If you are still training, look for entry-level roles. Some firms hire apprentices and recent graduates, and they help them gain experience and extra ratings over time.

Career Path

Growing Your Engineering Career

Helicopter engineer jobs in the UK can lead in many directions. You might start as a mechanic, then become a certifying engineer. After that, you could move into avionics, planning, quality, or a team leader role. Many people also add new type ratings, which opens the door to more employers and often higher pay. More and more engineers are becoming contractors so short term opportunities are also shown on AviatorJob.

Engineers leaving the military often find that their training fits civilian roles well. Our job briefs list the licences and ratings needed, so you can see which course will help you most.
